Secure Your Home with Fabio's Custom Staircase Safety Gate
Ensuring the safety of little ones around the house is always a top priority. This is why Fabio took it upon himself to create a custom safety gate for his staircase, cleverly using the space and making sure everything fits perfectly.
The Purpose of the Project
This safety gate is designed to prevent toddlers from accessing the staircase, thus preventing accidents. It's a practical solution for any household with young children.
Project Design and Materials
Fabio's design features a sleek, white safety gate that blends seamlessly into the existing decor of his home. The gate is mounted onto a drywall surface using solid studs, ensuring stability and durability.
Location and Functionality
Positioned at the top of the staircase, the gate serves as a barrier to keep curious toddlers away from potential danger. The choice of location is ideal as it allows for monitoring from different parts of the house.
Unique Design Elements
What sets Fabio’s gate apart is the use of custom-cut wood from TOSIZE.fi. This ensures an exact fit to his drywall, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional security.
The Role of TOSIZE.fi
The key to getting this project just right was using TOSIZE.fi for the woodwork. The precision in cutting and the quality of the wood provided a perfect base for constructing the gate hinges and supports.
The Benefits of DIY Projects
Crafting a tailor-made solution offers numerous benefits. You have full control over the dimensions, materials, and cost. Plus, there’s immense satisfaction in seeing your design come to life.
Scandinavian Style and Atmosphere
The gate maintains a minimalist, Scandinavian aesthetic, characterized by clean lines and functional design, complementing the serene and orderly vibe of the home.
About the Wood Used
The primary wood used is pine, known for its versatility and strength. Pine is a cost-effective option and is easy to work with, making it a go-to for DIY enthusiasts. It paints well, allowing Fabio to match it seamlessly with the gate.
DIY Tips
When installing a safety gate, always ensure that the mounts are secured directly to studs in the wall for maximum stability. This is crucial for drywall installations.

Step by step guide
Preparation
- I had to fix a safety gate to the wall, to prevent my one y-o from climbing up and possibly tubmling down the stairs. First attempt I simply fixed the hinge to the drywall, but it came down after opening and closing a couple of times. So I thought to screw it on a wall stud, which I located with a stud finder, but it didn’t align with the wooden rails on the other side of the stairs, on which the latch of the gate has to be attached. So I got a small, custom-sized panel to attach on the stud and extending to the desired location on the wall, on which I could fix the hinge.
Montage
- I used 80 mm screws to go through the 30 mm panel, 13 mm drywall (Google search says that’s the standard in sweden), and anchor a solid 37 mm into the stud. Hopefully this will give enough support in case my sons decide to hang on or climb the gate. I used a 30 mm panel to match the width of the skirting board, on which the lower hinge is attached. Fixing the screws was rather straightforward with a power drill, although the panel tends to rotate with the first screw.
Finish
- We are not too concerned about the patchwork appeareance of the result, so no extra finishing for now.
- In hindsight, the choice of timberwood was suboptimal, as it cracked when I drilled a screw too close to the edge (this was actually mentioned as a risk on the website, but lack of experience made me underestimate the possibility). MDF would have probably been a better option (or plywood, but this width was only available as whole sheet, making it too expensive). However, the whole thing looks solid enough and it’s holding on well at the moment. If this keeps working for a week or so I’ll do the same to attach a gate at the top of the stairs.
